It drew me in a little, mostly because I'm a sucker for love stories. That said, this is DEFINITELY a teen love story and there were quite a few points where I was like 'oh right, insta-teen love, hoo boy' lol. Also there is some... decided awkwardness with the "diversity" attempts by the author that mostly just feel like box ticking but also occasionally verge on racism. It's just weird. But it's still not a bad book in the long run, it did make me feel things.

Would have made me BAWL MY EYES OUT as a teen for sure.

Parts of it were kind of racist and offensive, but I think it was written accurately for the characters. The characters were created beautifully and portrayed fluidly. The story, at times, seemed boring. The setting of the 80s added a nice change from many typical contemporary YA. Characters were realistic and flawed, which made them more sympathetic.

This is a difficult book to try and review in one sentence, but let’s try: While the formulaic dialogue and banal character work at the beginning seem to hold this story back from its potential, the beautiful ending cleverly wraps up the major themes and serves to remind us of the wonders of falling in love.

Lovely

A real, honest, perfectly messy love story. I loved that this tackled some bigger social issues in the background. And I was so worried I would be disappointed at the ending - but it ended just as it should have.
