The Dutch (inspired) names and history were something to get used to - they deterred me because really, it felt a bit cringey. But I am glad I pushed on! Because Leigh Bardugo created a whirlwind of a story, in a wonderful world with characters that relate well to each other and all have their own twists, thoughts, and story. Great use of flashbacks and different POVs which kept the plot moving at great speed - although it was sometimes a bit too rushed and it is a bit uncertain how old the cast are supposed to be.

Re-read both books when Shadow and Bone came out on Netflix and years after it is still as good as when I first read it. One of my all-time favorites, the setting and world building is simple but intriguing, the characters are flawed and lovable, the plot is fast-paced and keeps you hooked, and I have yet to find a YA book that I enjoy as much as this one in all aspects.

i meaaaaaan the author is hugely popular and the book has great reviews. not a surprise i liked it.

positives: clever writing and well fleshed out world. characters are diverse and each feels like they have their own world going on. plot is a fun heist style so it keeps me on my toes.

negatives: sometimes it felt very hamfisted in trying to make kaz a cool guy. i just felt like he was shadow the hedgehog sorry!! also i know they grew up fast cause they had hard lives, but i still wish the characters werent teens. 

read this book if you like high fantasy with some grit to it. its only a little tense and suspenseful.
