I had a fun time with this book!! Incredible story building and atmosphere, I really enjoyed the setting of Ketterdam and imagining the characters’ place in it. I was a bit hesitant with the characters at first, worried about some typical YA character tropes, but they quickly evolved into deeper versions of themselves that made backstory flashbacks easy to enjoy. My only complaint would be the lacking focus on Jesper and Wylan within the story, it felt as if, though they were all ‘the main characters’, they fell into the background. I hope they get more attention in book two!

This book is so wondefully writen. It has the perfect pacing and everything is explained and described enough, but not too much that it becomes boring.
Dinamic and fight sence actually feel as if you are there and the adrenaline is overcoming you, a tense sences of negotiation feel like your standing in the middle of it and anticipating an escalting while the clock is thicking.

The characters are so comlex and it feels almost as if they are real. Everyone has their own unique set of characteristics and non of them are defined just by one (even though the book blurb would suggest other wise). For example, all of the characters are around 16-17 y/o who are thrown into very serious situation and so they had to mature much faster, but trough clevery placed remarks or thoughts you still see that at the end of the day they are still kids.

The dynamic between characters is so realistic and relatable, not to mention how organic the romsnce feels.

An easy 5/5 stars book that I would recommend to any (epic?) fantasy lover or anyone who wants to get into it.

A lot of the content warnings occur in flashbacks to the characters’ childhoods, so most of the violence and abuse is happening to children under the age of 15. Please keep that in mind before reading it. It’s an amazing book, but it could be very triggering.
