Inej, the Wraith, was living in the menagerie after being kidnapped and sold into slavery. Kaz purchased her contract and now she is working to pay back the contract price. Inej has skills that come in handy. She is silent, can run, climb, and kill. She is the woman behind the man, that is Kaz Brekker.
Jesper is a gambler. He can't sit still, he loves his guns, and he loves gambling. His gambling has gotten him into a lot of trouble, and he needs the money to pay off some serious debts he has wracked up.
Wylan is an explosives expert, he is also the son of the man that made the deal with Kaz. He is useful in his ability to make things blow up, and the ability to be used as a hostage.
Nina is a heartrender, she is a Grisha with the ability to make a person's heart stop. She is extremely valuable as an ally for her ability and for her relationship to Matthias. Nina is determined to get Matthias out of prison, since she put him there.
Matthias is a Druskelle, he hunts Grisha for the crime of birth. He is in prison because he trusted Nina, even though she was everything he hates, and now he is paying the price.
Together this band of misfits must come together and achieve the impossible, get Bo Yul-Bayur out of the ice prison, while not killing each other. Love and hate are such a fine line.

There is a lot of the darker side of the human experience covered in this book, and it can be gruesome at times.
It also tells stories of overcoming that violence and trauma without diminishing the fact that damage has been done and is not wiped away forever in a state of "having recovered".
I loved the well-written and very subtle foreshadowing carefully laced throughout the story with tremendous pay-off.

I was not familiar with the SHadow and bone series but as I was getting back into reading saw tons of fan art center around Six of Crows and was intrigued. I decided to check it out and was not disappointed It's been a while since I've been interested in the main characters of a story and the interesting cast, their backgrounds, and their relationships with each other were interesting to learn and track throughout their journey. The Grisha universe was cool to learn about and the different reactions to Grisha by the different societies. I love Leigh's prose and the way she describes things through metaphor. It made the books so enjoyable to read and really gave an imaginative experience. I do find the dark brooding super-smart protagonist to be one that's hard to make appealing but I actually found Leigh does a good job, his back story explains how he became who he is. on a related note, I found how she weaved the character back story into the ongoing narrative to be really well-paced. there are only a few minor nitpicks, Kaz does suffer a bit from what I call "so smart I'm psychic" where it seems like his off-the-cuff plans work a bit too well. though I have to say I found this very minor and Leigh made a good balance of telling us when his plans were going as planned and when things went haywire. I also listen to the Audiobook and thought did really like how each character's POV chapters were a different reader. I found this made the characterization of characters complicated. Inej's Kaz was very different from Mathias Kaz which was completely different from Kaz's VO so it sometimes affected how I interpreted different scenes with other characters. This is obviously hard with such a large cast but maybe more collaboration and syncing could help with the shifts. Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book with its combinations of a great diverse cast, intriguing story, and descriptive prose.
