4 is a bit strong, but still feels right. i tore through this super quickly, it was a very easy and captivating read. i kept trying to guess what the connection would be between evelyn and monique, but def didn't see it coming that harry's secret lover (who died in the car crash when he was driving drunk and who evelyn then moved to the driver seat to make it look like he had been driving) was moniques dad.

overall, i liked the way it painted a completely glamorous yet complex character out of evelyn. yes she was a bombshell who used her body to become a super famous movie star, but she was also a ruthlessly ambitious bi-sexual trying to figure out her place in the world. no one is purely good or bad, and this story explored that dynamic in a fun way. i also enjoyed the brief but legit tie in to malibu rising with mick riva :)

i will continue to read books by the author as they are super compelling

Ahhhhhhh!!! Großartig!!! Würde es am liebsten gleich nochmal lesen 🫶

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo feels like a story right out of old Hollywood. It explores her life as a movie star, all the things she does to reach stardom, all the things she goes through. She is not a perfect character; she is an incredibly believable flawed person. I have always enjoyed the stories of old Hollywood, the tragic lives many of those stars lived to get to where they were, and Evelyn is no different. Taylor does such a phenomenal job at making this woman feel real, especially when she admits who her secret true love is. The unfairness of it, the dangers of it, it's all so well explored throughout this book. A dear friend recommended I experience this as an audiobook, and I'm very glad I did. The narrator was exceptional in bringing Evelyn to life, making her sound regal, fiesty, and in grief. That isn't to say Monique doesn't also feel like an interesting character. She feels relatable, because she's a lot like other people who hit a low point in their life when their job has stagnated. She's practically a nobody, yet she has a big part to play in Evelyn's life.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is a great story for those who love historical fiction, especially stories of old Hollywood.
