A survivorship novel focused on, for once, not white folks in neighborhoods surrounded by barbed wire, but the inner city and the people of color making real lives there despite the surrounding dystopia. Strong female characters lead the way.

3.5 rounded up. A great urban dystopia set in downtown Toronto and steeped in Caribbean magic (Orishas). Despite some issues with the pacing (the beginning drags a bit too much for my liking) the story is quite satisfying. I especially enjoyed all the possession scenes - they were a perfect combination of creepy and thrilling.

Always love Nalo. I liked this more in the first half than the last, but still excellent.

I really wanted to love this book, but I feel like it kind of lost me for a large amount of the middle.

What I liked:
• the too believable near future
• the blending of sci-fi and fantasy
• set in Canada but not about nature (IYKYK)
• the premise / basic plot structure

What I didn’t like:
• I had a hard time connecting with the protagonist
• an underwhelming ‘villain’
• didn’t keep my attention for the middle portion of the story
