i really enjoyed this book. it felt like a mixture of plots that i already loved, namely game of thrones & throne of glass, mashed-up into one story. there was a baseline of political drama that didn’t really kick up until the very end of the story, but it will make for an interesting read going into book 2. without spoiling anything, i’m curious to see how the FMC will be going forward after all the events that occurred at the end of the book. there were a lot of things kind of left up in the air so it will be interesting to see where book 2 picks up and how it navigates all the chaos that is bound to happen.

Did this book sink its claws into my mind and not let go until I read the last sentence? yes. Imagine Daenerys from GOT, Aelin from ToG, and every other wronged FMC in fantasy and you have Elowen. She's badass and ready for vengeance. The non physical intimacy had me yearning for a love like the two main characters have. The found family trope was done so perfectly and the feminine rage was evident. There were some parts that were a bit long winded and the lack of explanation of the gods and magic in general in the world building left me extremely frustrated but I'm 100% reading the sequel next week when it comes out.

DNF 55% through

I was genuinely excited about this book because I’ve heard so many people rave about its dragon aspect. However, I’m now more than halfway through and have decided to DNF it. The book is incredibly repetitive and lacks high stakes. The fight scenes are bland, and the two main love interests are carbon copies of other fantasy characters. They’re not engaging or entertaining, and for the romance aspect I haven’t even laughed or cackled once. I’ve heard about the dragons Two or three times, it just wasn’t that exciting. I suspect the last two chapters will be more thrilling, but I don’t want to stick around for the rest of the book just to reach those parts. It’s not worth the time and effort.

DID NOT FINISH: 74%

I really wanted to like this book - it had great potential, but it ulitmately fell flat.

It feels as though the author wanted to write her favorite tropes, but instead of integrating (or even really developing a plot) she just loosely strung the tropes together, failing to develop any relationships enough to actually enjoy the tropes. I'd consider trying her future projects, but unfortunately this one did not work for me.

mmm I had higher hopes. FMC being given dragon eggs and they hatch after years of nothing was so dany targaryen. I liked the characters found family vibe!! But the romance happened so fast, I felt like the pacing was weird.
