Diverse cast of characters: No

Reading this with my daughter, I noticed that so much of the dialogue says ""[here is the sentence]," laughed [here's the name of the character]." Why the laughing?? None of it was funny??

Read aloud to Emma. Our 3rd in the series, and after the first two I was ready to throw in the towel thinking that these were way better as memories than read alouds...glad we gave them another chance. This was the first real mystery, an the characters are wetter developed and more enjoyable. I may be creating a mystery buff buts that's ok with me!

Great early read aloud series. The boxcar children go on a camping trip to solve the mystery of bill's disappearance forty years earlier.

This book is clearly the one where Warner clarified where she was going with the series. The focus is off the relationships and the plot takes a clear turn towards mystery-solving. It's not quite Bobbsey Twins level yet, but getting there. That said, my kids thoroughly enjoyed it and I started to relive that excitement this kind of gentle mystery brings to the under-10 set.

The Boxcar Children = most read series between the ages of 6 and 9 for me. I think of these fondly. Every child should read this series.

What the hell. Poor kind old Mrs. MacGregor, the housekeeper to all these children, used to be married to a thief, who ran off to do thieving things and left her alone for 40 odd years, never knowing if he were dead or alive. It turns out hubby has been living as a hermit, having stupidly swallowed a cock and bull story that his wife was dead (and even more stupidly failing to check, because the source of his info was criminal and vicious and oh, so trustworthy!). Four meddling children reunite them, and this is supposed to be a happy ending?!

All I can think is Mrs. MacGregor, who has missed out on her life and any potential family, has been screwed over but good.

One of my favorite childhood series. I read over a hundred of them. The first 50 or so were in order; after that I read whatever book I could get my hands on :)

Benny and the potatoes and his curiosity about the Toad was super cute. Love these kids as they help people and solve mysteries.
