Compulsively readable and utterly depraved, I cannot stop thinking about this book. Honestly, I think need a shower after reading it. 😅
Having recently visited Anaheim and Los Angeles, this was the perfect summerween read. Leede’s prose is sharp and riveting.
There are so many pieces of this book that I loved. It almost feels like this book was written specifically for me: a Disney-loving adult who is obsessed with Halloween and loves an unhinged villainess. Maeve is a character that I won’t easily forget.
⚠️ This book is dark! Disney + Pretty Pretty Princess meets American Psycho + Splatterpunk with some intense erotic horror. I want to encourage you to pick it up, but maybe approach with caution. 😉

This has been hanging out in my ebook library for a bit and I started reading it rather randomly. Maeve, the main character, is reading a book in a bar in an early scene and that's probably what hooked me to the character. Reading isn't the only thing that foreshadows later events, but it provides a constant insight into her view of the world.
The power of the female protagonist may be as intimidating to some readers as the ultimate violence.
Set in Los Angeles, we follow the bookish granddaughter of an aging starlet as she (un)ironically enjoys her job as a Disneyland princess. But wait, it's a hockey romance. But wait, the body count is rising.
The back copy mentions American Psycho, but before the walls get painted red, Maeve tries on other literary personas. Maeve definitely grows as a character, but not pleasantly. When the reader first encounters her she has a small support structure. A friend, memories of her grandmother and routines that keep her violent urges in check. This unravels.
Events climax around Halloween, allowing some of Maeve's shenanigans to hide in plain sight.
In the first 2/3 of the book or so many scenes fade to black before they get too intense or describe events with a level of detachment. As things progress our first person narrator is more present and us with her.
I think Maeve's twisted sense of justice would approve of the ending.

Minor: Alcoholism, Toxic relationship, Vomit
Maeve Fly by CJ Leede ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Unhinged. Raw. Heartbreaking.
Also, I will never look at eggs or curling irons the same way again.
This book is an EXPERIENCE. It's so very hard to put into words, without using terms like, "visceral", or stating it just flat out made me uncomfortable at times.
I did NOT like Maeve at the start of this novel...but by the end I was practically screaming at her not to eff it up!
This is a book that you just have to read for yourself.
(P.S. Thank you @@ceejthemoment for not k1lling Lester the Cat ❤️)
