2022 was a lackluster reading year for me, so I knew I wanted to start my year with a reread, but I also wanted a book I could get through as a quick "win" to start my reading year. It felt like the perfect time to revisit Dev and Charlie.

Boy, was that a great decision.

These two are just absolutely beautiful humans surrounded by other absolutely beautiful humans, and the talk about mental health that Cochrun has them engage in is so crucial. Dev and I are also incredibly similar even if his type and mine are radically different.

If "joy" and "reality dating competition" are words that spark excitement for you, pick this one up.

wasn’t my cup of tea. i am not saying that the characters weren’t loveable or relatable but the whole story and the drama, which a reality show related plot brings with it, was too much for me. it took me so long cause i just couldn’t get myself to keep going. team daphne

I really liked this book! The characters are so sweet I could die. Me and who honestly. I loved the discussion of mental health and how to deal with that within a relationship.
The last third of the book felt like it dragged on tbh, a lot of the conflict felt forced, but other than that it was a really fun read.

The famous/non famous trope is one of my favourites and this book really delivered. The whole idea of a reality dating show turned upside down BC the talent falls in love with a crew member and it's QUEER, I mean, that's everything I could want from a romcom. On top of this I think the writing was so funny. I laughed a lot. I already got emotional at certain points. The relationship was really built up well and I loved the characters, not just the main couple, but the B characters were so fun. I was rooting for everyone in this book (well except one person iykyk).
Besides the cute romcom plot, I also think it managed to talk about some heavier topics in a relatively light manner. Topics such as depression, anxiety, OCD, panic attacks, sexuality crises, asexuality, etc were all brought up and I never felt that it was dismissed by the author.

Okay so I just read this book in one sitting (ebook--my phone is at 3%) and I couldn't put it down. I had so many other things I planned to do and I'm about to go to bed late but arg I just haven't been pulled into a story like this in too long.

Even the parts of romance novels I usually don't like (i.e., the part where they always leave each other over some stupid miscommunication) were better in this one than they usually. The problems seemed real and not forced, and the characters tried their best to say how they really felt, pretty much all the time. I loved this book and I love all the queer representation too. I relate to it in so many ways, and it made my heart ache.

Oh my goodness. I have so much love for this book. So many topics are brought up in such a nice way. It didn't feel like too much. It didn't feel like a list of representation points they were checking off of a list. It was done tastefully and it felt natural. OCD, anxiety and depression. Heavy topics but dealt with so well. And the representation of not only non-binary characters but also asexuality, characters finding out they're gay & lesbian.

The story itself: I loved that it was basically like the bachelor but with a very great, very gay twist. Very engaging for most of the book, but got a little boring around 65% in. Got interesting again very quickly though :) And to be honest, I love when it takes a bit more time before they actually get together. I love the pining for each other without daring to make a move because "no way they like me". So I was a bit sad they got together so quickly lol. But that's definitely not a big issue to most people, probably!

Very Red, White, and Royal Blue which I didn't think was a bad things. This book explores deeper mental health issues than RWRB but had less sexual content and less "we can overcome it all" in my opinion. The book has POV from both characters which allows you to see each characters's feelings.
