This is a book that I don't need to own, I'm not sure how often my child would want me to reread it to him, but I can't help but want to own it because the words and images are so beautiful and the poetry is interspersed with great factual information. This would make a great gift for a nature-loving family.

Such an intriguing book. This would be fun to share with children ages 8 to 18 with it's riddle-like poems followed by explanations and descriptions of various things found in meadows.

I'm always glad to find a poetry book that I could have read to my kids. I think they would have liked this picture book that explores nature in a vividly poetic but also solidly scientific way. The riddles would have challenged them and the rich earth-toned illustrations enticed them.

Poetry which are also riddles combine with nonfiction paragraphs full of interesting facts and which also give the answers to the riddles. Add in the fantastic stylized illustrations by Beth Krommes which also give clues to the riddles and you have a another great book by Joyce Sidman.
I think my favorite nonfiction part was the facts about deer and trees. I was recently out in a part of the forest that is recovering from a forest fire. It's amazing to see the young trees growing back.
I also loved the shape poem of the toad! That wouldn't work well as a read-aloud, but it's a LOT of fun to look at!
