When I read this in middle school, I definitely remember feeling like there just wasn't much plot to this book. Like, it was really all just setup and incorporating the photo. And I definitely understand why I felt that way upon re-reading it. It's such an interesting premise, the characters are lovely, and maybe it's just because I don't really read series anymore, but this book just did not give me enough. I'm not sure I ever actually made it to the second book as a kid, but I'm not opposed to trying again.

This book was very much a step back into my childhood as it has been several years since I have read it.

The story held up well and was engaging, however some photos felt as though they had been forcibly included and this disrupted the storytelling. I like the dark tinge to the book and wish that this had been explored more as it could have sparked intriguing moral debate. I liked how loops were explained and hope that further books better explore this element of time travel.

I was hooked into this to start off with and I was intrigued with the peculiar children, I wanted to find out more about them. Once the mystery behind them and other things were revealed though, I became a little less interested.

I've been wanting to read this for awhile now, thinking that it was a horror novel but it wasn't as scary as I thought it would be. I'm not saying that's a bad thing but I found myself continuing to read only because it's this month's book club book.

I'll keep reading the rest of the books in the series, but I'm not in a hurry to get the next one just yet. While I was reading I could see how well the book will translate into a film. I am VERY interested to see the movie, especially because it's a Tim Burton movie.

LOVED the first half of the book. Extremely well written, characters were realistic and believable.

But then after the halfway mark it got a little less interesting, and I suddenly got an inkling of where the ending might go so I read straight through to the finish.
HATED the ending. It didn't inspire me to want to read the sequel at all. I just felt bad for Jacob's dad. He can't catch a break at all with father OR son.

it was not what I was expecting at all. Most of the book I was expecting something MUCH more mysterious to happen instead of basically the beginning of the book where grandpa tells jacob what happened actually being exactly what happened. They kept making it seem like everything was about to change and this story wasn't going to be a story about kids back in time with talents who were running away from very (imo) boring monsters.
