The only other Magda Szabo book I read was Door and I loved it. This is an earlier work (1970) and very different in tone. It draws a fascinating picture of Hungary during World War II while staying away from all the major happenings of the war. The novel is a reflection of the war, as it was reflected inside a girl's boarding school in eastern Hungary. At once it is a psychological novel, following the lives of a group of rebellious students and quirky teachers, a political novel capturing the confusion and brutality of the war years, and above all a tense thriller. A wonderful read.

this was so beautifully written and really did a good job of representing girlhood. i do think it was a bit hard to follow at times, but i will put that down to things getting lost in translation. i would certainly recommend this to anyone.

a slow start perhaps but my heart was pounding for the last chapters of the book (a few tears also left and right)
Abigail is the story of a teenage girl going through WW2 in a secluded strict all girls school. Her view on WW2 through the lense of a very secular life gives an insight that i didn’t expect. at times i forget they’re at the height of the war, then suddenly, things she might not be understanding, makes you realize what is happening behind those impenetrable walls.

perfect.
