It may have started slowly, but by the end, I was in love with this book. Fantastic characters, moving storyline, beautifully executed story, all set in a part of history I wouldn’t have otherwise interacted with. The third act moves incredibly fast, but Szabo did a good job of building the suspense throughout the book. Loved it and would definitely recommend.

Perfect, no notes. I loved this book<3
I was stress crying the last 100 pages. What a read! This novel has stayed with me for a long time after reading it. I think it’s because of the school setting, they’re all kids and the war setting. Even though I like The Door better overall, this one has stuck with me more.

Like there are pieces of this that were good, but for every thing I like, I can find something that opposes it that I don't like lol
I do find the historical setting of this story to be really fascinating, almost like how I found the perspective of The Nightingale to be really fun to explore. Children during WWII in a German occupied country with the added fact that the main character being the daughter of a rebel sounds like an amazing set up. However, this story did not end up being all that interesting. The one time there is an air raid and the whole final sequence were probably the most powerful moments in the story and they come and go and everything else in between is just blah. Gina is pretty unlikable in my opinion and all of her friends are just as unlikeable. I only really liked Susanna and even though I could see the Abigail reveal from like page 5, I still found Konig unlikable. The writing was also soooo boring and empty and had like zero dialogue which is pretty common in novels from before the 2000's in my experience but I still don't like it.
It twas a slog, but the whole scenery of the Matula and the WWII backdrop did give an atmospherical intrigue so there was at least that. I liked reading about the little secrets among the girls and all of the ways they made life more tolerable as well. I really do love her father though, that really breaks my heart but Gina is too whacked out to like ever fully process his sacrifice.

Beautifully and empathetically written. Perfect emotional tone, vivid characters, and well-realized setting - an absolute wonder to read from beginning to end.
