Zig is a mortician who prepares the dead soldiers at Dover Air Force Base for release to their families. When a woman identified as Nola Brown comes into the morgue, Zig is surprised, because he knows her. However, something doesn't seem right. He finds a hidden note on the body, and thus begins an investigation into why the military is hiding details of a plane crash and why is Nola running. Zig finds a connection of people on the plane to Harry Houdini.
This is the first in a series about Zig and Nola. I am not really a fan of political/spy thrillers, but I had to read book 2 for a book club, and thought I should read the first book to gain some background into the characters.

I loved reading Meltzer's "I am..." biographies with my kids but hadn't realized he also wrote adult fiction. Tried this one even though I'm not a big fan of thrillers. Didn't love it. Didn't hate it. Glad I checked it out, but won't read others.

45% though I still didn't feel like I really knew either of the 2 main characters beyond a minimal level.

It started well. I was really liking it but about half way through the author stopped showing and started telling— explaining— the plot!! It was a dramatic shift and by 3/4 through it was like he was just finishing it bc of a book contract. The writing was ok but got worse as it moved on. There is very little character development and all the “figuring it out” in a good thriller is replaced by 2-3 pages of explanation. Two stars is generous.

This book takes place very near my house. In Dover, DE there is a place where the fallen go for them to get special treatment before their families bury them. "Zig" is known to be one of the best and can put someone back together so their family can give them the burial they wish. When a body comes in with a name he recognizes this one hits close to home and he must make sure she is taken care of completely. But things aren't as they seem and he is swept up into government lies, secrets and some drama from the past.
