This book was so hyped I thought I was in for something marvellous. Instead, I got a crappy version of a Crichton with none of the fun. Everyone was a caricature, many threads lead to nowhere, and it felt like Catton could not be bothered to put the research into the issues, technologies and environment to at least make it interesting.

A bit of a slow burn in the beginning, and the preachifying -- while I guess necessary -- was exhausting to read. Ultimately an incredibly written book, and the last 25% was gripping.

there is not a single tolerable character in this whole mf thing. and i do not even care that that is the point, i was so consistently pissed off at everyone being insufferable the whole time i was reading that i couldn’t have enjoyed the book if i tried. i appreciate the sentiment but i really could not wait to be done with this
