Whoops, finished this last week and never logged. Really, really liked this, more than I expected to. Great story here, unexpectedly tense.

This may be a case of bad timing and me not vibing with the book and the writing style but forcing myself to push on because I might enjoy it more or it might pick up or my time is running out on the copy I borrowed from the library and it's already taken me over a week to read.

It starts off quite slow. Going on long, rambling, half page, sentences that by the time I reach the end I'd forgotten the beginning. That put me off a bit as I found it hard to focus a little and kept having to go back and forth. I also found the characters to be quite unlikable, which I think is the point, but it made me struggle a little more with connecting to them and caring about these long ass characterisations.

The mystery it builds up is interesting. I enjoyed the story. The end third was very good and the pace change up was appreciated but it didn't quite make up for the slog of the first two thirds for me. Reading this is a dedication, I really do love the themes of struggling environmentalism under capitalism and how much will these characters stick to their morales. I just personally couldn't get into this completely.

Look, I thought this book was great. But it didn't capture me like The Rehearsal or The Luminaries did the first time I read them. But saying that, I loved it. I thought it was fun and ridiculous take on a modern Shakespearean novel while also being suspenseful and meaningful.

Maybe because I was watching Shadow and Bone at the time but I kept picturing Lemoine as Ben Barnes, even though Ben Barnes is British? I guess I could picture Ben Barnes convincingly playing an Elon Musk-type.

And I kept on picturing Tony as this guy Julian that was a housemate of this other guy I used to hang out with. For some reason Julian was always just getting out of the shower walking around wet just wearing a towel with skin pinked from the heat of the water. I hated him, so it took me some time to "warm up" to Tony, I will say that.

DID NOT FINISH

DNF - Too much of a slow burn with thick, rambling text that kept my mind wandering elsewhere. I was enjoying the character development, but I need some dialogue or chapter breaks or something to break up the blocky text and keep me feeling motivated to read. I'm bummed because I was super sold on the premise, but I can't dedicate that much of my time with the hopes of it getting better, when I'm already so far in and not captivated.

The first 2/3 was a little slow, but the last 1/3 made up for it!

It was a good read, but the first 200 pages were a bit too slow for me. The second half was great , even though some characters made me furious

Like Shelley and Mira being so young and impressed with Lemoine even though he’s clearly a bad man, they feel so naive. I’m happy Lemoine is dead and in my head, the real ending is that Tony got his scoop and was able to show the world who Lemoine really was

Ending is a bit rushed but I get why.
