I accidentally read this first because I didn't realise it's actually the third book in Chronicles of Carlingford so was a little confused when Oliphant assumed the reader would know things (which they would if they'd read the preceding books!). This is a really engaging forgotten Victorian novel and although quite long I'd definitely recommend that people who are interested in nineteenth-century literature read it!
