maybe I really am just a hater with too high standards because I kept waiting for it to click and it never did :-/ interesting plot and world, but weak technical writing and half from the perspective of a pretty much insufferable space cop

This book was so much fun! I got pretty strong Firefly vibes from this book, although I can’t pinpoint exactly what it was about the book that reminded me of Firefly. It was fun, action packed, and super diverse. I will definitely be reading more in this series.

It's pretty good, I generally like the characters even if Miller is a bit of an ass. I like Fred; he's good and honorable. 

The plot is pretty good; pacing is pretty good. They build drama and tension without being too hacky.
The ending is interesting

Too misogynistic, patriarchal, and boring. There is infinite potential for a space opera and this one chose cops, guns, thugs, guns, rape, bombs, detectives, guns, prostitutes, guns... you get the picture.

I prefer my sci-fi to be as imaginative, adventurous, and action-packed as Brandon Sanderson's or as innovative, interesting, and intelligent as Becky Chambers'.
