The Serial Killers Wife - Alice Hunter
⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
EVERY MARRIAGE HAS ITS SECRETS... Beth and Tom Hardcastle are the envy of their neighbourhood - they have the perfect marriage, the perfect house, the perfect family. When the police knock on their door one evening, Beth panics. Tom should be back from work by now - what if he's crashed his car? She fears the worst. But the worst is beyond imagining. As the interrogation begins, Beth will find herself questioning everything she believed about her husband. They're saying he's a monster. And they're saying she knew.
I had saw so much hype about this, and was excited to read it. But it was different than what i thought it would be. I found Beth to be a very unreliable narrator and even as I was reading her parts I was like ‘hmmm something doesn’t sit right here.’ It wasn’t that the book was bad, it was just different to what I expected, and Toms POV characters just annoyed me to be honest. I would like to have had it all from Beth’s. I saw that Alice Hunter has a second book out ‘The Serial Killers Daughter,’ I haven’t read the synopsis of this - and don’t ruin it for me if I’m wrong - but how great would it be if it was from the perspective of Beth and Tons daughter Poppy.
Fun Fact: Alice (the authors name) & the protagonists full name (Bethany)…. Are actually the names of my daughters!!

This was a surprise. I had it in my mind that this was one type of book and instead, I definitely got a different one. Not that that's bad, it just threw me for a loop.
This book has multiple POV which was definitely surprising for me. It has the wife, of course, but it also has the husband, the person presumed dead and a few others. All of these POV threw the story a bit as I didn't really like the POV of the husband, but I can see where all perspectives rounded out the story.
It's a good story but not necessarily filled with a lot of tension. Secrets are revealed in well timed spots and I did like the ending. Love the cover too!
A huge thank you to the author and publisher for providing an e-ARC via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.

Completely Hooked!!!
Absolutely could not put it down! The ending had me gobsmacked and swearing out loud. A brilliant and menacing story with believable characters.

This is another one that I have had on my shelf for AGES! I think it was an impulse Tesco buy and I had very high hopes for it.
We are dropped into the middle of Beth and Tom’s marriage, with a young daughter and Beth’s cafe in their country village, they appear to be living the dream. Until one day, when the police knock on the door, with some questions for Tom, some questions about the death of his ex-girlfriend. It is at this point that their idyllic life starts to unravel, as Beth questions what she really knows about her husband and WE question what we really know about her.
Unfortunately, though the concept was good, the execution of this just wasn’t. There was an element of cheesiness to the story, Tom and Beth’s ‘perfect’ country life was the stuff of Tory housewives’ wet dreams but if I’m honest just made me roll my eyes, everything was tinged with Cath Kidston and I didn’t find it very relatable (or believable). The title kind of gives the plot away so there’s not much tension to be had for a book that purports to be a thriller. Even the chapters from Tom’s perspective seemed overwritten and not believable. There was a twist but it was alluded to SO much that I guessed it pretty early on.
Honestly I felt this was a very lazy book, there could have been so much more psychological depth but it felt like it was pandering to bored housewives in country villages who harbour fantasies that their husbands have an interesting dark secret.

If you're looking for a beach read that doesn't take much thinking, this may satisfy you. That said, the story is slow, and I don't mean slow burn -- just slow.
