Listening to this one was quite nice. It was read by the author. I hadn't realized how this book could help children understand death.

One of the first chapter books I ever read on my own. I was so proud I tried and finished (with MAYBE 50% retention) my dad's copy of The Fellowship of the Ring in like 2nd grade.

I seem to be finding a pattern in my reading habits since having watched The Great American Read. I find myself reading more and more of the books listed there and I find that I am wholeheartedly loving them.
Charlotte's Web is a children's book but I don't think that makes it so adults can't read it. I love children's books and I can never help myself from imagining me in the future reading to my children if I ever decided to have them. This book has a lot of lessons in it which makes sense for a children's book and it has a lot of worth as a story. There is friendship and there is a sort of plot. The story didn't have me hooked, but that's probably because it is meant for children, but the book did have me feeling a lot.
At the end of the novel when Charlotte has her children and dies, leaving Wilbur alone, I felt my heart break a little. That's something in a story which would make the children reading it cry and I understand why. It's a weird way to teach empathy. Or I guess it's not weird, because so many people learn to be empathetic through reading. We feel for Charlotte because she was really a great character. She was humble. She was radiant. She was terrific. And she was some spider I must say. She used her talents of writing for good uses. She was unselfish and loving and a great role model despite only being a spider. I also love that she is a spider. People hate spiders. I can't even tell if adults or children hate spiders more, but this is a good book to show that spiders aren't that bad. They have a purpose. It's also a good way to show that people's outward appearances do not determine who and what they are inside.
Overall I must say that this book was an enjoyable read. I think it's a perfect children's book and deserves the praise it receives. I think I'll be giving it a 4 out of 5 stars. Wonderful stuff.

I've seen the movie many times when I was young, but never read the book. It's a great story!

Charlotte is the only spider I love other than Spider-Man.

Obviously a classic! Very emotional at the end, I think the first time I have seen my daughter cry at a book. Amazing how words can make us feel so deeply!
