I was so excited when I learned that Akwaeke Emezi was writing a prequel to Pet. This book was so good and really expanded on the universe of Pet. It also felt very of the time, especially with how people can show up for protests in different ways.

I really really enjoyed this book. I was so happy to find out this book existed. After reading and finishing pet. I wanted more of this world and Lucille. This book did not let me down! This book gave so much backstory to pet and made me love Bitter even more. I loved Bitter's backstory and getting to know her more than just as jam's mom. Even though I knew how the Angels came to this world from pet, it was still amazing and wowing in how it was told in this story. I thought that this story wasn't rushed and was told at the perfect speed for this story. I still would love to read more about this world, town and family. I also loved that I could place characters from pet in this story. I think this was the perfect prequel to pet.

A little bit too much on the nose, but a beautiful and powerful story nevertheless. I really liked seeing all of the characters from PET in this story. I love the depiction of Bitter and Aloe’s love and relationship and also the friendships that she had with blessing and Alex as well. Improvement in the writing style as well in regards to writing for teens whereas in Pet it was a an uneven mixture of middle grade and teen style to me.
