After loving Still Beating, I had high expectations for this one, and unfortunately I just never really connected with it. It was fine, enjoyable enough, but there was always something missing.

One thing that I was never able to get over was the way Oliver speaks. On one hand, I know he read a lot and would have gotten a lot of his knowledge of language from books. On the other hand, he was taken as an 8-year-old who would have already had a pretty decent grasp of the language and would have had a youthful way of speaking, and he wasn't completely alone for 22 years, he had Bradford. It's unknown how much the two of them actually communicated, but to me it didn't make sense that he had such an intellectual way of speaking, and that made him feel very unnatural. (Also, a few months after he came back, he was using words like 'ensemble' and there was no mention of him pronouncing it properly or not?)

Also, if Syd really meant that much to him, he would have remembered her. Sorry, but he would have thought about her every day. I still remember people from when I was that age or even younger.

This book had me all in my feels and got my attention! I needed to know what was going to happen next and make sure it was what I wanted. A love story and a twist!

This story was full of trauma, beauty, lessons, and love. Out the gate this story grabs you and keeps you invested in the two main characters. Rooting for them to get their heads out of their asses every step of the way ❤️

I would have given this 5 stars but I figured out who the villain was pretty early on.

Outside of that predictable part .... it was truly a fantastic read with some overlap from Still Beating. It sets up the storyline for the 3rd book in this series beautifully. I can't wait to start Tabitha's story 👌🏻

Incredible!!!!
emotional medium-paced

Such a different type of love story. I feel like this had too many negatives in one neighborhood/group. But I still felt like it was a beautiful heartbreaking book. Oliver was so sweet although, when I read from his point of view I felt like I read to myself like a robot. His vocabulary was not what I would expect after being captured for 22 years. Syd, loved her at times but she bothered me a lot too.
