I adored this. Took me a while to adjust to the modern political fiction style but it was pulled off so brilliantly. The book managed to both give weight to and challenge my own perceptions and explored characters with plausible experience, growth and opinions. I would recommend.
Coe, pur scrivendo del Regno Unito, è riuscito a dare un quadro più che veritiero anche della situazione italiana: la "paura" verso lo straniero che sfocia in odio e razzismo, il politicamente corretto, la mancanza di fiducia nelle istituzioni e nel governo.
E la nostra banda dei Brocchi è lì, che prova a mantenersi a galla, nonostante sbagli, paure e incertezze nei confronti di se stessi e il futuro.
Questo libro è una bella, anche se un po' maliconica, chiusura. I Brocchi mi mancheranno sicuramente!

Some characters felt a bit one-dimensional but that’s to be expected with such a huge cast.
2.75 for it's lacking sense of humor but 3.0 for the compelling social analysis (2.5 counting the terrible development of Sophie's storyline concerning her workplace)
Middle England is een boek dat ik gekocht had omdat het bij een 2+1 actie zat. Ik ging af op de cover en las dat het een komisch verhaal was. Dit was een trigger voor mij omdat ik dit soort boeken nog niet gelezen heb.
Voor het lezen bleek dit een deel te zijn uit een reeks. Ik heb voorgaande boeken niet gelezen, maar ik heb ook nooit een moment gehad waar ik dacht dat ik niet kon volgen.
Het boek zelf gaat over het leven van een aantal karakters. Op zich is hun leven niet zo interessant en gebeurt er niet zo heel veel, toch ben ik met plezier blijven verder lezen. Sommige stukken in het boek deden me wel echt lachen. WEER een ervaring rijker.
Het leuke aan het boek is dat het een fictief verhaal is dat zich afspeelt tijdens echte gebeurtenissen. Het zou ook zomaar echt kunnen zijn. Ik vond wel dat ik me veel kon voorstellen omdat het boek zicht afspeelt tot tijdens de brixit.
Niet alle karakters waren even interessant. Niet alle hoofdstukken lazen even vlot. Maar al bij al een aangenaam boek.

Certo che Coe ha un modo veramente strano di scrivere. Quasi asettico. So che è un termine forte da usare, però non mi viene in mente altro. Questo romanzo non è poetico, e non cerca nemmeno di esserlo. E' una chiara rappresentazione dell'Inghilterra degli ultimi sette anni, vista attraverso gli occhi di personaggi appartenenti alla classe media.
Non avevo aspettative per questo libro - nel senso che l'ho comprato d'impulso perché mi piaceva la copertina - e non avevo mai letto nulla di Coe - ho una copia della "Banda dei brocchi" in giro per casa, forse più avanti ci darò un'occhiata; comunque l'ho trovato piuttosto piacevole.

Druhá knížka na Brexlit seminář - a opět se mi líbila (možná až moc!) Mám ráda současnou fikci, zatímco politická díla moc nevyhledávám, ale tohle podáno velmi decentně. Brexit je sice klíčovou součástí příběhu, je ale tak nějak v pozadí životů všech postav. Coe sleduje zásadní události vedoucí k Brexitu a různé názory, ale zároveň popisuje události jako londýnské nepokoje (London riots), zahajovací ceremonii olympiády 2012, zavraždění Jo Cox a spoustu dalších střípků. Vedle toho všeho je ale místo na rozvedení osobních příběhů celkem dost vysokého čísla postav, na skoro až poetické momenty a na obyčejnosti každého života. Klimaxem je tedy referendum, ke kterému vede dlouhá cesta ilustrovaná nejen politikou v pozadí, ale také názory a myšlenkami obyčejných lidí.
Za mě určitě pět hvězdiček, protože mě čtení bavilo, příběh plynul, a zároveň se autorovi povedlo zaznamenat spoustu brexitových nuancí.

I had not realised this was the final part of a trilogy. Or maybe the third book in a longer series. It reads perfectly well (and very well) as a stand alone, although I do confess to it taking a while to sort out all the characters, which I put down to my advancing age, but happily may be more related to not having the earlier novels under my belt. It was an excellent look at England in the years leading up to Brexit (maybe Brexit? Who knows at this point) mainly from the point of the view of the privileged white population, although they were pretty diverse in themselves. You also got plenty of looking back to the 70s ('nostalgia is the disease of the English'). You get scenes of political correctness gone to extremes, rebellious youth who can cause all sorts of mischief, basically because they can, a passé political commentator who maybe isn't quite so passé and to my mind has some of the best scenes in the book and a host of other characters connected by family, friendship or happenstance. I will certainly go back and look for the earlier books in this series.
