Rating: Really Enjoyed It!

I finished this book in a day! I had a fantastic time with it. I think that the buildup was a bit less enjoyable than the last book and there was more emphasis on the battles that occurred, but once Temeraire and Laurence got to China, I really loved it.

I think that Simon Vance does a fantastic job with the audiobook, and I am looking forward to continuing on in this series!

Naomi Novik is one of my favorite authors, and, if this had been written by anyone else, it probably would be a five-star book for me. But it's not quite as strong as His Majesty's Dragon and kind of lags in the beginning and toward the middle while they're reestablishing old characters and setting the scene for the voyage and for China. That said, the action scenes are amazing. I can't say why without spoiling the book, but there are 3 in the last third of the book that had my adrenaline pumping. I also love Temeraire's crew, though Hammond irritated me at several points (as he did Laurence). 4 and a but stars for me.

As a second in the series, I enjoying the plot and the story. Looking forward to the next one!

So much of this book was traveling, I felt like there were barely any Laurence and Temeraire interactions until the end. Definitely not as strong as the first book but it left on an interesting note.
