Lots more drama and political maneuvering than I expected, but still entertaining. One of the most delightful aspects of the first book was Laurence and Temeraire's relationship. So
SpoilerI was really disappointed at how fraught their relationship became in this second installment, constantly undermined by nearly everyone in authority.
I do hope that the next books get back to adventuring and tone down on the scheming.

Very fun.

I can't exactly call these books "cozy fantasy" given the backdrop (the Napoleonic wars) and frequent violent action, but honestly the relationship between Lawrence and Temeraire gives me the same, wholesome, soulful rest and comfort

Definitely had a “filler episode” vibe to it. Still planning to give the third book a try, though. This installation added a layer of complexity to the world building by comparing the treatment of dragons in different parts of this parallel universe, and I’m interested to see where Novik takes the story once in the third book.
