An improvement over the first book in the series (in my opinion at least).
Temeraire and Laurence journey to China, facing storms, battles, assassins, and politics. You continue to get the excellent English gentleman dialogue with all of its subtle posturing, and entertaining battle scenes. Some character motivations seem a little off, but overall everyone is well written. It's great to see how dragons are treated in China as well.
Not the most spectacular book ever written, but it's highly entertaining.

Still the same smooth prose, engaging story, and historic feel.
I liked this book a little less, mainly because some of the social morays got in my way a bit, as in getting on my nerves.
Still a wonderful read and I am certainly going to keep going on the series.

It's a little to slow.
While I still enjoyed this read, this book didn't have as much excitement, color and wit as the 1st book. It is a heavy, political read. Interesting, but often slow-paced and the China section (Part III) was a bit of a bore for me to finish.
I'm looking forward to the next book!

I quite like the voice of Temeraire, and I don't mind Laurence, although this suffered a bit from Second Book Syndrome in that a lot of it seemed to be transportation and the issues are dealt with a little hamfistedly, perhaps, so I almost wish it was plot driven only. It was still a good beach read, but I liked the first book better. I think I'll hunt down the rest from the library.
