I found this book a slog to get through at times. The will-they-won't-they nature of the central conflict was too drawn out. There are several books after this one. It is incredibly hard to buy that the author would separate Laurence and Temeraire for any real time. Hopefully the next one has better pacing.

I enjoyed this book a ton - though I do have some gripes with the pacing.
Make no mistake, I disagree with the reviews claiming the journey portion of the book was boring or unnecessary. I myself am in a D&D game right now where an in-game 6month journey is taking us two years of biweekly playing to finish. Things happen during travel; character development and growth chief among them. We would not, as the reader, hold the same affection for Laurence and Temeraire, had we not spent this time with them.
My issue was mainly with how quickly things got resolved at the end. I'm surprised the intrigue just... Stops abruptly. Still, a great follow up to the first book, and I'm excited to see where things go next!

This book was good, it was not as good as His Majesty's Dragon. But I think that is a risk that you take with series. Not ALL of the books in EVERY series are going to be GREAT. Some are even barely readable, but I have yet to read a series that did not redeem itself somewhere down the line. And it is not like I went from 5 stars with HMD to 1 star with ToJ. It only went down 1 whole star point. Why? Because it did what a second of a series book is supposed to do. It got a little further into the head of Will Laurence and his Comrade Temeraire. You got to see both more of who they were as individuals as well as a cohesive team. You got to see and get to know more about some peripheral characters as well.
I will admit that this book took a while to keep and gain my attention, but as others have noted, it was because of the time spent on the ship. Realistically, there is no way that Novik could have written "So they set out to sea, with no incidents, fair wind and calm seas from England all the way to China" and then resume her tale. That would have sucked. Did alot of nothing happen on board the Ship? Sure, but we also had an assassination attempt, along with a bad storm AND a SEA MONSTER!!! Too many people died on the voyage for us to say uh, yeah that was kind of boring NOTHING happened while they were on the ship. Really? If you really think nothing much happened, maybe you should re-read that part. I think that this book was a good second to HMD and can not wait to get time for book #3, which is waiting on my shelf at home.

This is the second book in the series. You need to read the first to understand the relationships between all the characters. I enjoyed the first book better but this one was still good. I thought the ending was a little abrupt though.
In Throne of Jade, Lawrence and Temeraire, travel to China with a Chinese prince, their aviator team, an ambassador, and the crew of Captain Riley's ship. After discovering in the last book that Temeraire is a Celestial breed of dragon, China is determined to return him to the Forbidden City. The Chinese prince is trying to separate Lawrence and Temeraire for his own political gain, The ambassador is willing to sacrifice lawrence and Temeraire's relationship for trade agreements, and the sailors have become wary of the dragon and the aviators. All of this bodes for an unpleasant and dangerous journey to China.
