"Funny thing, watching gods realize they've been mortal all along" Overall the book was pretty good. The introduction to the world felt a bit long, but nothing crazy given it's a trilogy. Darrow is fine. His arrogance in the beginning is a bit annoying, and i wish it was desperation instead that

led to the risky mining maneuver to try to win the Laurel

. I REALLY liked the effect death has on Darrow,

especially the fact that his first kill pops up several times and how deaths have longer consequences

. The

romance was not great. Virginia felt not very dissimilar to Chani from Dune. I hope we see more of her personality in the future, but her personality kinda went away after she and Darrow started getting closer.

The writing is not difficult, and I would recommend this to someone who wants to get back into reading. However, yes this is small, Pierce Brown definitely likes using "balls" as part of his descriptive vocabulary to a point where it gets a little annoying, so keep that in mind. An engaging plot nonetheless, especially if you like Hunger Games and Dune.

This is a solid read. I appreciate how it does grapple with what do you do when you meet evil and they're not all purely bad.
That being said the main charecter is a little underdeveloped as are a lot of his relationships. But his position does make for good world building and overall it's a great start to a series
