Thinly veiled sexism and Greco-Roman masculinity drive the theatre of war in this gritty tale of purpose and pain. The story hums with the themes of video-games like Ark and Rust, with inspiration drawn from mythology and daddy-issues, Brown crafts a story clearly intended to be a saga jogging in fatigues to the glory of forefathers; not mine, but someones. While the first chunk of this book serves as nothing more than a diving board into a Marvel-esque reboot sense of character development, the latter half reads like the fantasy of the 80’s. If you like quick, barebones stories of violence and brotherhood - this will be right up your alley.

I was not a huge fan of this book. It started off with a huge plot point, but there wasn’t enough introduction into the characters at that point for me to really feel connected to what was happening to them. I should have been so emotional, but instead I felt flat about it. The rest of the book was very slow and boring (even though there were big plot points, it took forever to get to them and again I never really felt connected to the characters to care). The characters, especially the MMC, was so annoying - the way he spoke, the stupid decisions he made or didn’t make, his immature impulsivity - just drove me crazy. The ending had action, but mostly fell flat. I usually enjoy dystopian novels, especially those set in space, and I was very disappointed in this book. The story was very much a boring space version of The Hunger Games. I don’t even think I care enough to finish the series or find out what happens next. This is most likely a one and done for me.

Ok I’ve decided I do in fact really really love this story. I’m normally a romantasy girlie, but this sci-fi read was fun af and I super enjoyed it.

The world building was excellent. The colour coded class system was quite fascinating and the background history put into the colonization of our solar system was really remarkable. Super cool.

The institute itself was a very interesting concept as well, with the different god houses (it was giving the Hunger Games but if they were sorted into 12 different Hogwarts houses and had to fight in teams mixed with a dollop of political espionage, found family, power struggles, and the traumatic brutalities of war)

It felt like watching people (teenagers) create, destroy, and recreate civilization again and again through a hyper speed jump of human history. It was rather epic. I found a lot of the messages it served very intriguing and it was rather fascinating seeing how everything panned out in the end. Lots of really epic twists and turns.

Sevro (aka Goblin) was by far my fav character. He reminded me of my most fav DND character I’ve ever played, Yucky. He was so fun, and such a chaotic, gross, lil rascal. What a cool dude.

Anyhoo! Can’t wait to start the next one and see where we go from here!
