Ok I’ve decided I do in fact really really love this story. I’m normally a romantasy girlie, but this sci-fi read was fun af and I super enjoyed it.

The world building was excellent. The colour coded class system was quite fascinating and the background history put into the colonization of our solar system was really remarkable. Super cool.

The institute itself was a very interesting concept as well, with the different god houses (it was giving the Hunger Games but if they were sorted into 12 different Hogwarts houses and had to fight in teams mixed with a dollop of political espionage, found family, power struggles, and the traumatic brutalities of war)

It felt like watching people (teenagers) create, destroy, and recreate civilization again and again through a hyper speed jump of human history. It was rather epic. I found a lot of the messages it served very intriguing and it was rather fascinating seeing how everything panned out in the end. Lots of really epic twists and turns.

Sevro (aka Goblin) was by far my fav character. He reminded me of my most fav DND character I’ve ever played, Yucky. He was so fun, and such a chaotic, gross, lil rascal. What a cool dude.

Anyhoo! Can’t wait to start the next one and see where we go from here!

I don't think I can put into words how much I loved this book but you already know I'm still gonna try lol

First of all: series is so deeply political (in the same way that The Hunger Games is) and I am absolutely not the right person to give an in-depth analysis of that aspect because there are so many more layers to this than my pea-brain is capable of comprehending, but still: it was written in a way that was so easy to follow along, never making me feel stupid despite the complexity of the whole situation.
Which is, you know, a pretty incredible feat.

I 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙙 the main character, Darrow. If this guy had one thing, it was the fucking audacity lol his impudence gave me life. The thought of what this kid will undoubtedly go through in the next books is making me feel a bit unwell.

𝘙𝘦𝘥 𝘙𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 put me through ALL the emotions. Rage, fear, sadness, hope, vindication, desperation, amusement, despair. Some scenes made me howl with laughter, gasp in shock, recoil in horror. Twice I inhaled so sharply I choked on my own spit, it was a whole thing. Startled my cats and everything.

I can totally see how or why this book might not be for everyone. It was violent and upsetting and there were 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘁 of characters and names to keep track of (which is usually my worst enemy) but I thought it was phenomenal. When I wasn't actively reading it, I was thinking about it. It left such a lasting impact.
As soon as I finished it, I immediately wanted to re-read it.

TL;DR: If you enjoy dystopian science fiction, world building, war strategy and political intrigues, Roman mythology, unhinged characters, a wickedly smart MC, and humor despite it not being a funny book - chances are you'll love this.

Without giving anything away, I wasn’t expecting as much of the book to be about the process of the plotline as it was, but I enjoyed it. I think if you like the story types of Ender’s Game or Fourth Wing, you will also enjoy this one

Red Rising is a book filled with political intrigue, war strategy, and dystopian rage smushed into one.

It gave me some of the same feelings I got from reading The Hunger Games as a teen. That inner rage at injustice. That on the edge of your seat feeling.

This is not a light-hearted book. It’s detailed, complicated, and focuses heavily on character development. Which honestly, I love. It’s also very lacking in any romance, so if you’re looking for that, you won’t find it here.

I have a feeling this is one of those epic investment series. You get to grips with the characters so deeply, it kind of changes you, and I’m looking forward to the ride.

I really didn’t know what I’d think about this book! I often dislike books where the protagonist has to steel themselves emotionally to fit into high society. But I think Brown did a great job writing Darrow’s internal monologue. He thus far has not lost his sense of self or where he came from.

I’m waffling on how I feel about the cadence of the book and its intended audience. These characters are teenagers but they feel like adults. The transformation of Darrow in the beginning is quite graphic too. In terms of cadence, it felt a little quick which wasn’t what I was expecting but I think I liked? It seemed that once Darrow set his mind on taking a fortress, they’d implement the plan within a chapter or so. It kept the book riveting.

Like the hunger games but if the MC was actually the most confident sort-of-idiot ever. Sort of homestuck. Very fun.
