I kept waiting for this book to live up to the hype...it never happened.

I feel like the ending fell flat. The story was a bit long winded but overall I really enjoyed it.

A little too slow paced for me. I agree with another reviewer...I find Peter Straub's wording and sentence structure confusing at times, and needed to re-read passages more than once. The story didn't flow well into my mind. I can usually sink into a groove, but not with this book for some reason. Reading this felt like a lot of work.

There were some definite scary and spooky bits, but the rest of the book felt like a slog to get through.

I thought this was a reread for me, but as I went along I was sure that I had, in fact, never read this book, but had only seen the movie. I felt this would be an excellent Christmas read. It was set in a New England winter season and follows nicely, the tradition of ghost stories at Christmas time.

I was incredibly scared by this movie when I saw it back in 1985 on VHS. But now as an adult, I found the story even more disturbing. I am glad I finally read this classic.
