Ghost Story by Peter Straub

At first, Ghost Story was a banger. But after the initial paragraph that hooked me, the story slowed and I found myself losing interest.

By page 34, the characters shifted, and I found myself following a group of wealthy old men for as-yet-unknown reasons.

By page 100, I still had no idea why or how the abductor and kid from  the first 30 pages connected to the old men of the next 60.

Worse, I skimmed ahead to page 116 and saw I was about to go back in time a year, still with the old men, and I was too exhausted (read: bored) to continue.

I understand that this book is important to a great many readers, but it wasn't for me.

Although published before IT, certain aspects of this book reminded me heavily of that story which is definitely a positive. Very creepy at times and the author pulls no punches. Really well written as well. 4.5/5

It was okay. I think it's possible that I'm just not into him as an author. I liked Talisman, but wasn't wild about Shadowlands or Hellfire Club. I think I just don't like his prose, it feels tortured and scattered and unfocused. But, hey, I've been known to have bad taste. It is interesting that this predates Stephen King's It, and they both share a lot of ideas.

Not sure why so many people loved this book so much. Maybe it's that I prefer books that move more briskly, but this book drug on and on for me. I just didn't find it all that exciting. *shrugs*

Everyone says that this is such an amazing novel and a quintessential horror novel that every horror enthusiast should read.
Everyone is wrong. This book blows.
