I love a good feminist retelling and I've read another Medusa reimagining before. This one was not good compared to the other I had read previously. I liked some aspects like how most of the povs were female characters, but it was so slow and that many povs didn't add anything to the story. It didn't feel like the focus was supposed to be on Medusa. The ending was okay, liked how Athene "went home", but otherwise the ending was quite a letdown. I was hoping for so much in this and didn't get much of anything. Honestly with how slow it was, I should've dnf'd but I pushed through.

The way the author performed the audiobook added a lot to the story.

4.25/5. I can’t really put my finger on exactly how I feel about this book. I definitely enjoyed it - I thought the book was very well written and pretty interesting. The author narrated the audiobook I listened to and she was perfect. Those things are what made me arrive at the 4.25/5 rating. I don’t know that I’d recommend it to just anyone, though. If you find Greek mythology interesting at all, you’ll probably like it. It’s a retelling of Medusa’s story (and a bit about the adjacent gods and demigods) with different points of view scattered throughout. Otherwise, you may feel like it was kind of… pointless? I can’t think of a better word to convey what I mean. Even though some “big” things happen throughout the book, they don’t really build up anticipation in the same way other books do.

A dark but funny retelling of the intertwined stories of Medusa, Perseus and Andromeda.

It was an interesting narrative style with some of the narration addressing the reader directly, and taking a pop at Perseus for his stupidity.

There weren’t many likeable characters in the books. It was hard to like Athene or Hera because of their victim blaming of women raped by the Gods.  The Gods and demigods were petty, vengeful and full of their own self-importance. However the three Gorgon sisters were eminently likeable, fiercely loyal to one another and transform this story into a feminist retelling.

There are three strands to the story: Perseus’ quest to save his mother from unwanted marriage; Medusa’s rape then Athene’s curse; Andromeda the child of a vain fading beauty. These strands come together beautifully. A cracking good read.
