I kind of like Cara Dee now. I've binge read two of her books back to back. They had a very different tone but they were both page-turners.

This book put me in the same mood of panicking over child abduction for no reason and losing sleep over it. I was reading it and being like "Well I'm never going to leave home ever again, so thanks for that".

It's depressing and sad even though it's mostly about escape rather than imprisonment.

I didn't get why the author didn't elaborate on how Gray ended up there, it's barely mentioned even though it seems so important to the flow of the story. Boring and sad, yes, but also very important.

I'm not in the mood to continue this now, but it's not off the table.

The lack of in depth focus on the characters makes any mention of what happens to them feel gratuitous, somehow making them nothing more than a placeholder for a person, much the same way the abusers in this situation would see their victims. How am I to feel sympathy above what one normally feels when stories like this appear in the news, for characters that I can only tell apart by their basic physical description and their fear level? That goes for all side characters, but to be honest the two MCs weren't far off. I barely finished this and can't wrap my head around the 4 star average rating.
