Many readers aren’t fully aware of how the war affected southern and western European nations, particularly Italy’s internal struggles, its shifting alliances, and the persecution of Jews beyond Germany’s borders.

Sullivan’s choice to tell the story through Pino’s eyes—a young, often conflicted protagonist—brings a personal lens to the chaos and complexity of war. Pino’s observation about the many impacts of war, his emotional journey and the lessons he learns (perseverance, resistance, love, and ultimately the meaning of heroism) highlights one of the most powerful aspects of the book: that heroism is often quiet, messy, and deeply human. Loved this!
