This book was phenomenal. I usually read fantasy but this had me at the edge of my seat the whole way through. Hard to imagine the luck of Pino in the book-just crazy what life can throw our way and who we might meet. Cannot recommend enough!

Such an incredible life story of Pino Lella, I have never been in more awe of ones ability to carry on.

An amazing tale from start to finish. Kind of reminds me of “The Boys in the Boat” but less dense and more lively. The characters are memorable and fun to get to know, even if we only know them for a chapter or two. Plus, I feel that many WWII books don’t focus on what happened in Italy vs elsewhere in Europe. Absolutely not surprised that this is being made into a movie, and here’s hoping they do the book justice!

Pino Lella's story is fascinating. Even if his story had ended after helping Jew's escape over the Alps it would have been impressive, but to go on and do all he did was really intriguing. I haven't read much about Italy during WWII so I enjoyed learning more about that.

My main issue stems from my history-major self. I struggle with historical books being written like fiction. I would have enjoyed the book more had it been written in a journalistic style. I also lost steam in the last three-ish hours of the book, but really did want to know how it all turned out.

Overall I'd recommend it, the writing just didn't fit my personal taste.
