Amazing story of Italian Catholics helping Jews and Italians fighting Nazis

Books about WWII are difficult for me. The stories of death and destruction and the horror of what humans can do to one another are sometimes too terrible to hear. But within this story we meet the unsung hero, Pino Lella and how he manages to endure the losses to war that he experiences. This was a compelling tale of faith, despair, hope and love. The narrator telling the tale and feeling the emotions of this amazing character. A little too long, and I wish it had been edited a bit. But all in all a beautiful, bittersweet tale.

A fantastic story, written too plainly.

This book was beautifully written in my opinion.
It discussed world war 2 and how it impacted families in Italy. Specifically one teenager who helped Jews escape. He was then forced to be a Nazi and it caused a riff between him and his brother. He was later able to tell his brother he was a spy and they reconcile their relationship. This story is filled with angst, love, loss, and war.

Fabulous book! Took about 70 pages to get into but then I couldn't put it down. Great book club discussion, can't wait for the movie.

4.5* for story, 3.5* for writing

Took me a minute to get into this book. But once I did, I was swept away by this true story. How in the world is this a true story??!!

Pino Lella is inspiring.

And war is just crazy.

And I don't get tired of WWII stories.

Absolutely incredible!!! Beautiful yet heartbreaking, so glad to have read this

Wow. That was an amazing book; made even more so by the fact that it’s all closely based on a true story. I know almost nothing about Italy's experience of WW2 and I leaned a lot through this book. Absolutely recommend!
