I found the writing style a bit clunky, but the story was absolutely captivating.

The writing was pretty rudimentary, and the story was a bit unbelievable for a based-on-a-true-story historical fiction novel. I actually read Sullivan’s other WW2 based-on-a-true-story novel The Last Green Valley before this one and thought it was better.

This story would be incredibly wild if it were pure fiction, but it's all true! Hard to wrap my head around that. The MC goes through so much and prevails almost every time, and the one time he doesn't, it destroys him. Absolutely heartbreaking. This book is superb. It's impossible to encapsulate it well without giving it all away, so I'll just say I loved it more than almost every book I've ever read. Might even be better than Nightingale. And that's saying a lot! I finished this book 4 days ago and I still can't stop thinking about it and wishing there were more so I could keep on reading. Outstanding! Highly, highly recommend!

This book was compelling, gripping, and evocative. I read and listened to it. Toward the end I had to read more than listen because reading made certain events more palatable. It may not seem like it at times, but this is definitely a WWII story and has all the weight of one.

Based on a true story. Set in Italy during WW II. I find the mixed reviews interesting. I couldn't put it down and found the information about the war in Italy enlightening.

The book was interesting enough to finish, but just barely. I thought the writing was weak, the characters were weak, and the main character just happened to be involved in every major historical event in late WWII in Italy. Reminded me of Forest Gump, but that character was lovable! It also showed the Italian Catholic Church and hierarchy as being actively involved in trying to rescue Jews and prevent the holocaust, which is not what I have heard/read about Pope Pius and his response to Nazism.
