My favorite book of the last ten years! Such a gorgeous true story of a real WWII hero. I had no idea how the end of the war had played out on the Italian front. It was heartbreaking and there was so much loss but the Italian people were strong and beautiful and inspiring.

A haunting story. Worth reading.

What an incredible story! Despite what other reviews may say, I thought it was very well written because it sent me through a spectrum of emotions and I felt like I was right there with Pino. If I could give it 6 stars I would!

This was a very good book about WWII. It was told from a boy who lives in Italy. I didn't know the story of Italy's involvement in the war. It was interesting to learn some new things about Italy and the people who lived there. I really liked the first of the book, I was pulled in right from the beginning and could hardly put it down. However, as the book got closer to the end it was more and more depressing. I understand that it was written about war, but I think some of the detailed descriptions could have been left out. I recommend this book only for adults due to the graphic nature of some of the ideas.
