4.27 AVERAGE

probably like a 3.5 - the story itself was good, but the pacing was odd sometimes, and moments that felt suspenseful were overshadowed a bit by knowing that our MC survives to tell the author his story... there are a couple of scenes that really got to me, but there are also so many other important moments that feel as though they are breezed past. I still think it is good, but honestly haven't thought about it after initially putting it down.

This book…wow. Very very disturbing detail of Nazi brutality, the horrors of Jew Slaves, Auschwitz and concentration camps. Amazing the heroism of Pilo to save his country.

It was difficult to get into, once I was invested I really loved the plot. I’m conflicted though because it says it’s based on real events but it does seem to read more as fiction than non fiction. There’s limited documentation to support it but I also hate to discount someone’s lived experience of such a traumatic event. Overall it was a good book!

Currently speechless as I just finished. This was a beautiful book.

I really enjoyed this book from start to finish. The author managed to grasp my attention basically from the get go, with action starting almost right away. From what I understand based on articles I have read by Pino’s children and other people who knew him, this book is pretty historically accurate despite some discussion about the inaccuracies of it.

The last chapter, “The Aftermath” was phenomenal in tying the whole book together and clearing up any loose ends.
