I enjoyed the netflix series, so thought I'd read the book. To start with I really enjoyed it, but my interest waned about halfway through. There are many similarities between the tv series and the book as you would expect. If nothing else, it opened my eyes to what it's like being incarcerated in the american penal system.

This was such a great book! I did want more at the end, like how her life was after prison, and how she transitioned.

I picked this book up after already watching the show...which I have a love/hate relationship with. As I read it I had to continually stop and tell my husband how much better Kerman's story was than the show!

I loved her straight-forward, no excuses approach to her conviction and sentencing. Her story was full of hope and redemption even in the worst of circumstances. I loved learning about how her friendships in prison unfolded and how she navigated the somewhat ambiguous rules of incarceration. She didn't dwell on the petty, smutty or overly dramatic stories; she focused in and held on to the positives and survived her time with dignity.

I appreciated her inside look at a very corrupt and failing system we have upheld in this country. Hopefully it will change for the better.

Ugh Piper is borderline unreadable. This book had so much potential to be a well thought out story about the prison system, a statement on the inefficiencies of the war on drugs but it turned into a LOOK HOW SMART AND PRETTY I AM AND EVERYBODY THINKS THAT TOO! Glad she got a 15 month vacation and demanded sympathy for the last month of prison. What a tedious read.

I don't usually like memoirs all that much and I have no idea what possessed me to read this one. I'm glad I did, though. The author had the amazing ability to make me feel totally immersed in her experience. And even though this book was about Kerman's personal experience it was so much bigger than that. It had themes of humanity and friendship and justice and redemption. She was never condescending - not to the reader and not to anyone else mentioned in the book. It was serious yet entertaining. I saw a review where the reviewer was questioning why there was such a flippant title for such a serious book. I like the title; it may have even been why I read it.

I honestly think I would have liked this book a lot more if I hadn't watched the series first. Piper's story is interesting and has value to it. But when compared to the action and drama of the series, it's pretty boring.
