The Teller of Small Fortunes by Julie Leong has earned many warm 4-star reviews, and I can see why. I enjoy cozy fantasy books because they bring me the feeling of autumn, even when it’s still summer where I live, and this story gave me exactly that. At its heart, the novel is a tale of found family, reminding us that to truly understand our lives and purpose, we must sometimes return to our roots. Tao, the main character, embodies this lesson as she travels through the world, offering small fortunes to those she meets while quietly uncovering her own path.

Reviewers and I both appreciated the novel’s quiet, reflective tone, the quirky companions, and the way Leong balances humor, animal sidekicks, and lighthearted camaraderie with deeper themes of identity, belonging, and grief. While the plot sometimes dips into darker territory because of the group’s struggles, there is always a sense of light and hope at the end of the road. Some readers found the pacing uneven or the stakes low, but most agreed this is part of its cozy charm. Sweet, heartfelt, and thoughtful, it left me eager to read more from Julie Leong.

When I got to this point I did not expect there to be so much left and I did not want to read any more.

The narrator was annoying in the book. Didn't really grab my attention.
