This book is defiantly not my typical read, but my geology professor recommended it so I thought I would give it a shot. At first I was dreading it and kind of regretting my decision but once I picked it up I found it incredibly easy to enjoy. This is not a made up story it is real life told by people who were actually there. I quickly got roped into peoples lives and tried to imagine what they are going through. The writing style was not at all what I expected and was very fun to read and, even more surprising made me chuckle a couple of times. Though I do not believe this book is everyone's cup of tea, if you are concerned or interested in the environment around you, I highly recommend this book!

Interesting insights into the classic conflict of man vs nature, but in the real world! Really want to know more about his guy who built a castle in LA.

An examination of the human-nature relationship as provided through firsthand accounts of natural disasters. It’s both informative and easy to read, with a journalistic style that keeps the reader engaged.

This book was in three parts and I definitely enjoyed the last two better than the first.

Too much going on in my life to read a book this dense at the moment.

Like all McPhee books, an absolute delight. The first section, on the control of the Mississippi, dragged a bit, but the section on Icelandic lava cooling was terrific and McPhee's dry wit and irony shine in the final section on Los Angeles debris flows.
