My new favourite author. Loved the sense of place and the people were just so believable. Loved it.. 4 and a half ⭐️
As usual with Chris Hammer, a well-constructed whodunnit, this time in an opal-mining town. I recently visited Coober Pedy (South Australia), Australia’s opal mining capital, and Hammer got the ambiance (and heat!) just right. I see that he still has a penchant for outlandish names (e.g. one of the mining magnates in the book is called ‘Delaney Bullwinkle’), I’m surprised his editors haven’t put a stop to that yet!

I think the thing I loved about this book the most is it is unapologetically Australian. The language, references and locations all true to a great country that is often under-represented especially in literature. So many English speaking authors no matter where they live write for the American market and ignore the rich culture of their native countries.
Chris Hammer writes a brilliant book based in an outback opal mining town in the heart of Austalia and everything about it screams authentic, down to earth, true blue Aussie.
The book as well as having a great plot is also well researched and informative.
