I am not sure how to accurately describe why or how I loved this book so much especially given the bleak subject matter and even bleaker ending. I think what resonated with me most was O'Brien's description of the purpose of power: not ideological or fanatical or aspirational but just power for power sake. For the torture, defilement, and degradation of others as the end goal. Kind of reframes the current political discourse. Yeah, I don't really have much else to say.

An interesting story, and in some ways scarily believable! Feel like the second half of the story could have been longer though

“Perhaps one does not want to be loved so much as understood.”
I just sat staring at the last pages for a few minutes. Left me with goosebumps.
I could feel how Winston felt at the end - that dread, but also the relief.
Around halfway through the book I was like, this is just a cute little romance about two rebels. But, wow - the third part is just astonishing, i’m lost for words. Goldstein’s treatise pained my soul, though.
A timeless masterpiece - unforgettable.

A dystopian classic for a reason.

It caused my OCD/anxiety to spike because the sad truth about this book is that we are slowly reaching the reality of events in the book into modern society. There are no heroic or super action-based moments, besides
Torture
If you have anxiety that can easily be heightened, I do NOT recommend reading.
If you do read please remember that this book is a warning. NOT a guide! It is creepy how similar the world of the book and reality are.

1984 deals with a ton of heavy topics (obviously), but the ideas it presents are still very relevant today; it provokes a lot of thought on the roles that censorship, oppression, and language take in our modern lives as well as the roles they played in history. I do feel that this novel gains more worth when read and studied in conjunction with other pieces regarding similar topics, like Orwell's "Politics and the English Language" or Huxley's Brave New World, rather than as a standalone read since they allow for other perspectives/arguments on the subjects that 1984 presents.

As a book, though, it's not... super great. The prose is okay if pretty dry and none of the characters are particularly likeable in personality (although they're very interesting people. To me.) If you come here looking for a good story, I wouldn't say that this is it, but it's a fantastic work to analyze and reflect upon.
