This is one of those books that has the inverse effect of the author's intention - to scorn tales of knight errantry. But by its forward-thinking narrative and everyman humour, ultimately ends up romanticising and drawing attention back to these old tales which most would prefer remained in their place of scorn.

The number of iconic scenes in this book is incredible, the knight of the sorrowful countenance is now forever emblazened in my mind.

I hope I never hear the name Dulcinea del Toboso ever again. Reading this was excruciating but the audiobook (Tantor Unabridged Classic version read by David Case) was enjoyable. A grand adventure I suppose. This classic is just very wordy and meandering. I enjoyed it but also very over it by this point.

I don’t know if it was because I was tired (I only read it in bed before going to sleep at night), but after 6 months I’d gotten through only the first 100-odd pages. But then it (or I) started flying. The first thing that got me was the cat joke (im in yr cavalcade saturizing yr litrary deloojuns), then the rapidly escalating violence, and by the time Sancho got tossed in a blanket, I was laughing out loud every few pages. A couple more thoughts about metafiction here:
