DID NOT FINISH: 54%

honestly it was just boring. i thought it would pick up, but it did not and there was no real conflict

Ally Carter is an absolutely amazing writer and this whole teenage spy idea is magnificent. I love it and i am itching to reread it soon.

middle school me would’ve eaten this up! (in fact i feel like i read a story on quotev with a similar plot once.) too bad i never got around to reading gallagher girls back then. a super quick read that was somewhat frustrating in the way lower YA books sometimes are once you’ve aged past that demographic, but i liked the little jokes and the worldbuilding of the spy school! the rest of the books are on hoopla (i think) so maybe i’ll just read them when i want some brief, self-indulgent escapism :)

Just rereading my favorite middle school series cause I never read books 5&6. Still as fun as ever.

Non-Spoiler Review:

The first book of the series, I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You, does a perfect job of introducing the main characters and showing the readers their personalities and what "role" they play in the group. Cameron is the leader, Bex is the loyal friend and strength of the group, Liz is the brains and heart and Macey is the gateway to the outside world. Furthermore, Josh's character and the shenanigans that ensue in his romance with Cammie allow the writer to shows us where each characters stands before she presents us with the distractions villains can become. This book can also be used to reflect how much the characters grow by the end of the series.

For other reviews & more bookish content,

This was a cute and fun read. I was more interested in Cammie's friendships then her relationship with Josh so near the end of the book I was tired of reading about him and wanted more scenes between her Liz, Bex and Macey. Actually I wanted to read from their perspective as well. I love the teachers and her mom as well. I might continue the series :).

I actually went into I’d Tell You I Love You But Then I’d Have To Kill You with very low expectations. The cover seemed cheesy, and I read All Fall Down by Ally Carter and I didn’t really like it. With that being said, I loved the first Gallagher Girls novel.

Cammie, the main character, attends an all girl school for spies. If you didn’t know, boarding school is one of my favorite YA tropes. I love learning about characters without having that ‘well, where are their parents?’ feeling. All the characters in the book had really interesting backgrounds which made me love everyone even more. The school itself is really interesting. There are several passageways and hidden corridors that make the school really complex and interesting. The school, students, and teachers kind of remind me of Hogwarts.

While doing an undercover mission, Cammie meets a boy named Josh. Josh and Cammie’s relationship felt a bit ‘insta-lovey’, but the book was under 300 which made events feel a bit rushed. Although the events in I’d Tell You I Love You But Then I’d Have to Kill You felt a bit rushed, I really enjoyed the book and have already started the next book.

Super fun read! Can't wait to read the rest of the series!

Loved the premise of teen girl spies. Then it turned into a relationship/romance book. Sigh
