Meh. It was okay. It wasn't great...I mean, it was extremely predictable and it didn't have much of a plot.

For a course I'm teaching---reading this one again, I got a greater appreciation of what life in 12th-century Korea was like and the main character's an engaging one.

Sweet, interesting, informative, predictable. I enjoyed it thoroughly and found it compelling, but I’m not sure I’ll remember it a week from now. Very redemptive and beautiful.

This is a lovely story that demonstrates the value of hard work, perseverance, love and beauty.

I'm continually impressed at how Newbury medal award winners have been so far and above the literary milieu quality-wise.

I "preread" this before giving it to my 11 year old who doesn't tend to read much if any historical fiction, and he loved it. I loved it. If I were to just sum up the plot, it would almost sound boring. I mean, pottery sounds boring, doesn't it? But it wasn't, not in the least bit - that's good writing, right there!

Lovely coming of age story. Universal themes of reaching toward an impossible dream. Even more enjoyable with a basic understanding of Korean history.

It was fine. I did it as a read aloud to my 8 and 11 year olds. The 11 year old bailed about 2/3s of the way through but the 8 year old wanted to see how it ended. He said he liked it but didn’t need to read it again.

This book is worth the Newberry Award it received. It has some positive messages: the power of hard work, the importance of learning step by step, the importance of honesty.

This book is absolutely incredible! It is an incredible look into another time and culture that is completely accessible to younger readers!!

3.5 stars. This was a really interesting story about an orphan boy who becomes a potter's helper in 12th century Korea. It was definitely lacking a sense of time/place and the ending was quite abrupt but otherwise I did really like the story itself.
