I really liked this book. The prose was beautiful. Tree-Ear was brave, mature, hard-working, and dignified. Unfortunately he had to grow up too fast. Crane-man offered some humor and some very wise sayings. I enjoyed learning new things about pottery and ancient Korean history. The book was also clean and could be enjoyed by a wide range of ages, although it did deal with some heavy themes, including homelessness, grief, and physical abuse. I plan to read more historical fiction by Linda Sue Park.
Moderate: Child abuse, Death, Violence, Grief
Minor: Child death, Suicidal thoughts, Death of parent

It was honestly mid not the worst but I've read better
Maybe the idea of reading a book with the unfamiliar setting of 12th century Korea sounds unrelatable, or even boring. I wasn't sure if it would interest me, but I'm working my way through the Newbery Award winners, so I gave it a try. I was able to listen to the audio version through our library system, and loved every minute of this timeless and beautiful story. One of my new favorites.
A short book that carries a punch. Such dedication must exist for an artistry so exquisite. I love the imagination, research, and heart that went into writing this book and appreciate how it is explained in this 2002 edition.

It's easy to see why Linda Sue Park won the Newberry for this book. Rich details and lyrical language combined with an understated writing style that befits Asian cultures make this a terrific read for all ages.
An incredible beautifully written book. Anyone who loves pottery, Korean culture, and a touching story, will love this book.
